The Animation Process
This image has two animation layers set at different opacities so that they don’t blur together. The trees in the back are walking through the woods hunting for food while the grass behind them moves as their roots disturb the Earth below. I was able to loop each layer’s effects to save a little time.

Drawing and inking
I drew this design with digital pencil and the image above shows my inking process. I still like to ink my drawing prior to painting them. I don’t know why. I have always done this since I first learn to draw comics and I guess the habit has just stuck. I find that I can plan for my light, darks, and details easier this way.

The Shading Process
Shading this tree was lots of fun. Lots of wooden textures to consider during the process. I find that creating a layer under the inks keeps me focused on the important parts. I used shading to add additional lighter crevices for more detailed look.
The Painting Process
The painting itself has almost 24 layers…yes I got a little crazy. I built as much depth as I could into the main focal point which was the monster in the middle. The build up of layers allowed me to make the texture of the wood seem more blended with the light and shadow. I was able to make it look a bit more dilapidated as it is a bit of an older monster.
