Christmas elf DIGITAL PAINTING COMPLETED

Christmas elf digital painting completed

Today I completed my #Christmas #Elf #Digital #Painting. You may have seen my previous post that I uploaded of my digital pencil #sketch. If you missed it, go check it out.

Design

This design has 55 total layers. Each set of layers was broken down into separate folders to keep the #elf, the #tree, and tree elements such as #decorations separate from everything else. This totally paid off too because I was able to affect changes to those specific items while isolating them, so I didn’t accidentally change something else.

This time I uploaded some various versions of the same design. Three of them are cropped differently for more variety. The last one, which also happens to be the featured image, has a levels adjustment to make the scene darker and make the lights pop out more.

Coloring

I used a gouache brush to paint / color the design. Normally I just color flat while using selection layers but this time I wanted to get a more painterly look. I think the results turned out really good. I am very happy with the textures of the clothes and especially the bark of the tree in the distance.

Christmas Tree WIP (Clip Studio Paint and Wondershare Filmora)

Christmas Tree WIP (Clip Studio Paint and Wondershare Filmora)

Today I have a Christmas Tree #WIP that I am designing to starting bringing in the #Christmas season a little early. Recently I created a series of witches that were uploaded to YouTube surrounding the #Halloween Holiday. This month I am going to start a new run of designs themed on the #magic of #Christmas with a focus on elves. I want to create a conceptual Christmas world that shows more about the Christmas land that they come from and maybe a glimpse of mysteries, magic, and wonder that may be hidden away.

New Christmas WIP
New Christmas WIP

Christmas Tree

The current WIP is a digital pencil sketch with shading of an elf overshadowed by a giant magical Christmas tree. What is the purpose of this giant tree? Is it symbolic to the region? Does it contain a magical power source critical to the rest of the North Pole? Let your mind go wild with the possibilities.

Design

Since this is a pencil sketch with shading primarily to lay out the rest of the piece, there are only four layers in use. I created a sketch layer and then a final line layer to make the lines more confident and appealing. Beneath that is a shading layer to plan out future lighting and shading details. The tree was shading with a very large brush and then blended with a watercolor brush to make the branches more tree like and less of a blob.

You can see the timelapse here.

Cheeky Witch (Clip Studio Paint and Filmora)

Cheeky Witch Digital Painting

Tonight my #digital_painting is little on the naughty side. The #pumpkin patch’s favorite #witch is getting ready to fly on her broom. Can the pumpkins handle the show?

About

This digital painting was 24 layers that I combined into two separate folders. The design was created entirely in #Clip_studio_paint. There is a folder for the background and the pumpkins. Yes. I treated the pumpkins as background elements. I wanted to keep them from being too overpowering. A color balance layer allowed me to push the cooler blues out of the already warm reds, yellows, and oranges. There were so many color variations that I enjoyed, I had a hard time picking the one I wanted. The other folder by the way is dedicated to the witch herself. This makes it so much easier to control the lighting and colors of just the witch to do it this way. The lighting was completed after I removed a lot of the luminosity from the scene. The lights pop so much better when you start dark and go light. I hope you enjoyed this. If you have any specific questions, you can ask away. What do you think? Ghostly Search

This evening I finished a #ghostly #poem to provide you with some #hauntingly wonderful #entertainment as part of this #video. Please enjoy! It’s now live on YouTube.

About

The #art was created using #clipstudiopaint and is 16 layers. Two of the layers are add glow layers which enhance the ghostly appearance of our scary wandering ghost. By putting the glow layers on top of each other, it compounded the effect of the ghostly look. A couple of green gradient layers provided a creepy ambiance. I erased out where I didn’t need it to show up. To keep control of the focal point, I limited where I used the glow effect.

The Poem

I wrote the poem last after I completed the image and uploaded the music. I let my emotions guide the literary aspect of the poem by visualizing myself as the main character. I thought of what the ghost might be thinking or “feeling” so to speak and wrote based off of that.

Final Touch

I used #wondersharefilmora to do the final editing and create the poem overlay in the video. It’s so easy to use but I was concerned about the timing of it all. I didn’t want to go too long through each scene without something to read. I use the music options of the #filmora to select the sounds that went with the scene. There was so much to choose from.

I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did creating it. Halloween is my favorite holiday. I’m sure no one can tell though…hahaha.

For those who have subscribed, thanks so much!!

For those who haven’t, I hope you give it a thought!

Take care and happy watching!

Water Maiden

Tonight’s #digitalart is a water #maiden who lives in an old abandoned #pirate cove long forgotton. #clipstudiopaint was used to design this 20 layer digital #painting. #wondersharefilmora was used to finish the piece into this #beautiful #syfy scene video.

This is all part of my latest project for my #YouTube channel to provide #mood #music for my fans. For those #artists out there, some good listening #vibes allows the creative juices to keep on flowing.

Drawing Process

Haunted Evening

Introduction

Do you like #ghosts? The season of #Halloween is soon to begin so I designed this animation of a haunted environment to start the excitement early.

About

This #haunted #environment was created using #Clip Studio Paint and #Wondershare Filmora. Each element was designed and placed into an individual folder. This allowed for easy modifications to be made when needed and also simplified the animation when I put it all together.

Design

The elements in each folder consisted of seven layers. Each one used a glow layer and some screen layers. The glow layers made the spectral visions of the spirits seem to jump off the page. Pretty cool I think. I used more of a painterly brush to bring out the ghostly essence. Lots of blending helped to keep the lines blurred and the color values more evenly spread out.

Animation

The Filmora video editor made is very easy to take the exported Clip Studio Paint video and add music. I added the clips and the music so that they complemented each other as best as possible. There was a particle field that I added which came with the software to make the scene glow with orbs. The music was found from the YouTube library of royalty free music they make available.

Hope you enjoy. I’ll be adding it to my mood music library. Check it out if you haven’t already.

Dystopian Cyber City (Clip Studio Paint Animation)

Dystopian Cyber City

Dystopian Cyber City is an #environment #animation made exclusively with #clipstudiopaint. This #conceptart inspired theme is set on a futuristic planet far away from Earth. Energy is in short supply to power the main buildings and you can see them pulse with light as you watch the video play.

The Design

The design was made using 28 layers for different effects. Some of the layers used were glow layers, overlay, a levels layer, and some screen layers. The layers were all built on each other with various blending modes to unify the scene and keep the environment ambient. I sought to create a #painterly effect to the overall piece by blending much of the strokes on the landscape.

The Animation

The animation was a test of #csp ability to create animation within the software. I found it very easy to do and easy to manipulate the various effects. The lights were on a separate timeline and looped. By turning off the opacity, I was able to use key frames to make the lights turn on and off. I added a #2d camera to get some motion into the scene as well. I think it added more of a dynamic effect.

The Video

The final video was exported from Clip Studio Paint and then imported into #wondersharefilmora on my computer. I could have uploaded it right into #youtube but wanted to build my #blog post first and then link back to it but I chose a different route this time.

I hope you enjoyed this. I plan on making more. Please like and subscribe and comment on what you’d like me to make if you have a request or a challenge.

Concept art idea book 2 intro video

Inspiration

What is this series about? In 2017 I published my very first book with the hopes of sharing my artwork with the world in the form of an illustrated book and providing value to those who just need some ideas to get started. I am all too familiar with artist block. That feeling of hopelessness that comes from not knowing what to draw. I find myself going to my own personal library of art books to overcome the block to get inspired by some of my favorite artists. I figure that if someone finds one of my books and is inspired by one of my images, then that is something to feel good about.

Process

This book was created using Microsoft Publisher. I had never really spent much time using it before and thought it would be an inexpensive way to build a book. I already had created much of my artwork using other drawing software so all I needed to do was to upload my images into the page layouts. I took the time to build a table of contents first so that I knew which images to put where. This also helped me decide what kind of articles I would add as well. Once the book was completed, I exported quite a few drafts and allowed myself to walk away from the project a while. I found that after a week would go by, I’d look at my pages and think “uuugghh! What am I doing?” The pages didn’t look as good as they had when I really get going. Time away does provide some clearer vision. Amazon really makes it easy to upload a book just so long as you are careful with page sizes and page counts. Every once in a while I would lose a page and everything would shift right or left. Kind of gets annoying but perseverance prevails.

Published for Kindle and Paperback

Where can I find it?

The book is going to take about 72 hours to promulgate on the servers but you can find it here. I’ll be sure to send more updates about it if something changes.

Have a great day!

How I used Clip Studio Paint and Blender to create an animated video (1st YouTube Tutorial)

How I used Clip Studio Paint and Blender to create an animated video

Making the Tutorial

I recently purchased a copy of Filmora to build and edit videos with. I see myself making more animated videos in the future. I don’t know why I hadn’t been using it before.

The tutorial has both the video screen captures from Clip Studio Paint so you can watch me draw and it on screen video capture from within Blender so that the process is more understandable. I am a little nervous when speaking publicly but this took it to a whole new level. Next time I’ll practice what I’m going to say more but the final project does sound pretty genuine which is what I was going for.

Animated Videos

If you haven’t seen them yet, I wrote about the recent videos that I had put together and posted on YouTube here and also here. People have already taken notice of these short gems and I think I’m up to five subscribers already. Woo Hoo!

Hopefully you all find inspiration and maybe get some knowledge for this instructional video. Always love to get feedback so let me know what you think.

Desert Witch (Clip Studio Paint and Blender)

I created another digital art piece combining Blender and Clip Studio Paint. This is an extra bonus since I just uploaded City Witch last night. I should probably think about pacing myself. 🙂 I am going to go back to posting only once a week but I had a vision in my mind for this one that I didn’t want to lose.

Desert Witch Blender Animation

Desert Witch Process

The design is about 25 layers using many correction as I went to adjust color and aesthetic for the overall design. This was created using Clip Studio Paint for the digital drawing / painting process.

Base colors and composition
Colors and Highlights
Final Polishing and Background details

Blender Enhancements

I uploaded the finished .png into Blender and added some additional lighting effects. For this design, I created a particle field to simulate the effects of being in a desert sand storm of some sort. The light which I set to 1500W, really sets off the glow that I was looking for and color matched very nicely with her clothes and other highlights. I just love the versatility I get when I use Blender.

Blender Enhancements

Forest Witch

I created another digital art piece combining Blender and Clip Studio Paint. This is the next installment from last week’s post. If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been witch themed for a while now. Makes me almost wish for Halloween again.

Forest Witch

Process

The design is about 40 layers most of which are corrections and refinements that I made as I went back over during the polishing stage. I just paint over areas I’m not happy with and use another layer. Don’t judge. Each to their own right?

Rough pencil

Blender Enhancements

I uploaded the finished .png into Blender and added some additional lighting effects. This was a lot faster this time because I saved my last project as a template. All I needed to do was change the lighting colors in my volumetric cube and upload the new illustration to replace the old one. The longest part is actually rendering the animation.

Below are some of the other versions.

Concept Art Idea Book 2 (Page Design Sneak Peak)

Sharing my continuing work in progress of my new concept art book. I have had to digest hours of YouTube videos and Pinterest images of various types of page layouts to get the knowledge I needed to successfully make my own. So thankful to all of the content creators out there who showcase their ideas and make products for newbies like me to learn from. As I learn more I will certainly pay it forward by making my own.

What have I learned so far?

Graphic design is as much a form of art as the illustrations I have spent most of last year creating. The layout process has a lot of similarities to the principles of design that I have been learning. For example, balance, composition, and focal points are also elements that you have to keep in mind when laying out a page. Another epiphany I recently experienced is that the same storyboarding technique I use to lay out a comic page works great to lay out a page of text. By taking a piece of paper and sketching how I wanted my page to look first gave me a decent road map to where I wanted to go. I’m just so intrigued by how many relationships I’ve found between skill sets. It helped me to reduce the fear of learning something entirely new to realizing that I’m really just adding a layer to what I already know.

Has anyone else experienced this? I’d really like to know epiphanies you have had.

Book Creation Process

I’ve been using Microsoft Publisher to lay out the pages for my book. It’s an app that I rediscovered on my PC. While I used to have InDesign, I found that MS Publisher is a very inexpensive way to accomplish the same task. As long as I compress my images, I can keep moving along pretty well. With almost 60 pages in my book full of images, I was worried it would lag but so far, so good. Once complete, I’ll upload my finished book and build a downloadable .pdf for purchase as well.

If anyone has any feedback on the page designs, I’d love to know what you think.

Happy writing!

The Wood Witch YouTube Video

Just uploaded my next video on YouTube. It’s a combination of an illustration made using Clip Studio Paint and Blender. As an artist, it’s very important to utilize all of the tools out there…and boy are there a lot. Blender and Clip Studio Paint work very well together in that you can start a project in one application and finish it up in another. Most folks I know create grey boxes in Blender, export them, and then import them into their favorite drawing program where they create their final illustration.

The Wood Witch on YouTube

The Process

This has been a work in progress for a while. I created the illustration last month. You can read more about that here. I have been trying to take my work to the next step by mastering lighting and special effects. I mentioned this in an earlier post too.

The figure study

Volumetrics

I took my polished illustration and exported it from Clip Studio Paint as a .png file and then uploaded into Blender. As you can see in the illustration below, I put my illustration inside of a volumetric cube. The bright orange outline show the plane that I uploaded my image onto. A feature in Blender called image to pane creates a billboard style look to your illustrations that you can then modify within Blender itself.

Volumetric cube with illustration inside.

By putting my illustration inside of the cube, I was able to create a particle effect in front of the illustration to give it a 3D look with some subtle movement. It takes a little trial and error to get it done right. I used this video to figure out how to do all of the fine tuning.

Volumetric cube with shader turned on.

Above you can see what the design looks like when you turn on the shaders. The yellow dots are the particles shaded with a bright yellow for contrast. A shader by the way is a term that displays the color or lighting effects within Blender that you chose so you can see how it looks while you create prior to processing the final rendered piece. I found that the program works faster with the shaders off and it’s not so distracting. It’s a lot like coloring in greyscale first prior to using real colors to make sure that the piece is balanced correctly.

Video and Audio Processing

Blender has a really cool video editor that I very much enjoyed using. After I was pleased with the results of the final MP4 video, I uploaded the audio file that I found from the YouTube audio library. YouTube has a lot of good choices to select from. I entered the search term for a “haunted forest” and found a track called Green Forest by Riot.

Blender video editor

The trick during this part of the process was lining up the frames with the audio. The music file was much longer than my 100 frame video so I copied and pasted it over and over until I had enough cells to line up with the music. Every other cell I selected the reverse cell option so that it didn’t look jumpy or like it was starting over from the beginning. I almost got up and walked away twice because it seemed tedious but I am pleased with the final product.

Final Image Capture

Above is the final rendered image exported from Blender. I added two spot lights to the image for a magical contrast. There is the spot light coming from the top left. It’s a little hard to see in this picture. The bottom light by the rocks is placed down below with the bloom setting turned on. This makes the rocks seem a little more magical.

I hope you enjoyed the process overview for this piece. If you want to see the finished video, please click the link at the top to check it out.

Send a note to me if you like it or if you think I should do more. If I know people like them and are interested in this sort of thing, It will motivate me to make more.

Happy creating!

About

This comic took about six months to write, illustrated and put together into a finished book. My inspiration for this comes from watching many episodes of Twilight Zone and Outer Limits. I always enjoyed stories where the ending was not what you were expecting. Irony in comics is one of my favorite writing styles when it comes to comics no matter the genre.

The comic was completely drawn and lettered within Clip Studio Paint. It’s starting to get a lot of the same features as Photoshop but caters more toward those who build comics with all the tools that are available. I typically spent about three to four hours a day building the pages for this.

About Me

I’ve been in the military for 24 years and have spent much of my free time learning to become a better artist. Many books have been read and many videos have been watched. When I was 19 I was going to art school at a community college but ran into hard times trying pay for school and work at the same time. I eventually went into the military thinking that I would do just one enlistment (four years). I met my wife of 22 years of marriage and raised five wonderful children together. During this time, it wasn’t an easy thing to leave a job with stability just to go into a completely different field so I chose to continue on in the military while also staying to stay active with my art.

Thanks

As always, I want to thank everyone who supports my ability to keep drawing, sharing, and doing what I love most.
