Concept Art Idea Book 2

Amazon Kindle Concept Art Idea Book 2

Amazon Kindle now has The Concept Art Idea Book 2 available to purchase. It’s been almost a year since I started working on my #digitalart book. I’ve had some recent posts about my progress over the past few months. There were days when I had to take short breaks and there were days when I took some longer ones. There is nothing better though than the feeling you get when you can say that you are all done.

It is available here on Amazon.

Concept art idea book 2 intro video

Inspiration

What is this series about? In 2017 I published my very first book with the hopes of sharing my artwork with the world in the form of an illustrated book and providing value to those who just need some ideas to get started. I am all too familiar with artist block. That feeling of hopelessness that comes from not knowing what to draw. I find myself going to my own personal library of art books to overcome the block to get inspired by some of my favorite artists. I figure that if someone finds one of my books and is inspired by one of my images, then that is something to feel good about.

Process

This book was created using Microsoft Publisher. I had never really spent much time using it before and thought it would be an inexpensive way to build a book. I already had created much of my artwork using other drawing software so all I needed to do was to upload my images into the page layouts. I took the time to build a table of contents first so that I knew which images to put where. This also helped me decide what kind of articles I would add as well. Once the book was completed, I exported quite a few drafts and allowed myself to walk away from the project a while. I found that after a week would go by, I’d look at my pages and think “uuugghh! What am I doing?” The pages didn’t look as good as they had when I really get going. Time away does provide some clearer vision. Amazon really makes it easy to upload a book just so long as you are careful with page sizes and page counts. Every once in a while I would lose a page and everything would shift right or left. Kind of gets annoying but perseverance prevails.

Published for Kindle and Paperback

Where can I find it?

The book is going to take about 72 hours to promulgate on the servers but you can find it here. I’ll be sure to send more updates about it if something changes.

Have a great day!

How I used Clip Studio Paint and Blender to create an animated video (1st YouTube Tutorial)

How I used Clip Studio Paint and Blender to create an animated video

Making the Tutorial

I recently purchased a copy of Filmora to build and edit videos with. I see myself making more animated videos in the future. I don’t know why I hadn’t been using it before.

The tutorial has both the video screen captures from Clip Studio Paint so you can watch me draw and it on screen video capture from within Blender so that the process is more understandable. I am a little nervous when speaking publicly but this took it to a whole new level. Next time I’ll practice what I’m going to say more but the final project does sound pretty genuine which is what I was going for.

Animated Videos

If you haven’t seen them yet, I wrote about the recent videos that I had put together and posted on YouTube here and also here. People have already taken notice of these short gems and I think I’m up to five subscribers already. Woo Hoo!

Hopefully you all find inspiration and maybe get some knowledge for this instructional video. Always love to get feedback so let me know what you think.

Desert Witch (Clip Studio Paint and Blender)

I created another digital art piece combining Blender and Clip Studio Paint. This is an extra bonus since I just uploaded City Witch last night. I should probably think about pacing myself. 🙂 I am going to go back to posting only once a week but I had a vision in my mind for this one that I didn’t want to lose.

Desert Witch Blender Animation

Desert Witch Process

The design is about 25 layers using many correction as I went to adjust color and aesthetic for the overall design. This was created using Clip Studio Paint for the digital drawing / painting process.

Blender Enhancements

I uploaded the finished .png into Blender and added some additional lighting effects. For this design, I created a particle field to simulate the effects of being in a desert sand storm of some sort. The light which I set to 1500W, really sets off the glow that I was looking for and color matched very nicely with her clothes and other highlights. I just love the versatility I get when I use Blender.

Forest Witch

I created another digital art piece combining Blender and Clip Studio Paint. This is the next installment from last week’s post. If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been witch themed for a while now. Makes me almost wish for Halloween again.

Forest Witch

Process

The design is about 40 layers most of which are corrections and refinements that I made as I went back over during the polishing stage. I just paint over areas I’m not happy with and use another layer. Don’t judge. Each to their own right?

Rough pencil

Blender Enhancements

I uploaded the finished .png into Blender and added some additional lighting effects. This was a lot faster this time because I saved my last project as a template. All I needed to do was change the lighting colors in my volumetric cube and upload the new illustration to replace the old one. The longest part is actually rendering the animation.

Below are some of the other versions.

Concept Art Idea Book 2 (Page Design Sneak Peak)

Sharing my continuing work in progress of my new concept art book. I have had to digest hours of YouTube videos and Pinterest images of various types of page layouts to get the knowledge I needed to successfully make my own. So thankful to all of the content creators out there who showcase their ideas and make products for newbies like me to learn from. As I learn more I will certainly pay it forward by making my own.

What have I learned so far?

Graphic design is as much a form of art as the illustrations I have spent most of last year creating. The layout process has a lot of similarities to the principles of design that I have been learning. For example, balance, composition, and focal points are also elements that you have to keep in mind when laying out a page. Another epiphany I recently experienced is that the same storyboarding technique I use to lay out a comic page works great to lay out a page of text. By taking a piece of paper and sketching how I wanted my page to look first gave me a decent road map to where I wanted to go. I’m just so intrigued by how many relationships I’ve found between skill sets. It helped me to reduce the fear of learning something entirely new to realizing that I’m really just adding a layer to what I already know.

Has anyone else experienced this? I’d really like to know epiphanies you have had.

Book Creation Process

I’ve been using Microsoft Publisher to lay out the pages for my book. It’s an app that I rediscovered on my PC. While I used to have InDesign, I found that MS Publisher is a very inexpensive way to accomplish the same task. As long as I compress my images, I can keep moving along pretty well. With almost 60 pages in my book full of images, I was worried it would lag but so far, so good. Once complete, I’ll upload my finished book and build a downloadable .pdf for purchase as well.

If anyone has any feedback on the page designs, I’d love to know what you think.

Happy writing!

The Wood Witch YouTube Video

Just uploaded my next video on YouTube. It’s a combination of an illustration made using Clip Studio Paint and Blender. As an artist, it’s very important to utilize all of the tools out there…and boy are there a lot. Blender and Clip Studio Paint work very well together in that you can start a project in one application and finish it up in another. Most folks I know create grey boxes in Blender, export them, and then import them into their favorite drawing program where they create their final illustration.

The Wood Witch on YouTube

The Process

This has been a work in progress for a while. I created the illustration last month. You can read more about that here. I have been trying to take my work to the next step by mastering lighting and special effects. I mentioned this in an earlier post too.

The figure study

Volumetrics

I took my polished illustration and exported it from Clip Studio Paint as a .png file and then uploaded into Blender. As you can see in the illustration below, I put my illustration inside of a volumetric cube. The bright orange outline show the plane that I uploaded my image onto. A feature in Blender called image to pane creates a billboard style look to your illustrations that you can then modify within Blender itself.

Volumetric cube with illustration inside.

By putting my illustration inside of the cube, I was able to create a particle effect in front of the illustration to give it a 3D look with some subtle movement. It takes a little trial and error to get it done right. I used this video to figure out how to do all of the fine tuning.

Volumetric cube with shader turned on.

Above you can see what the design looks like when you turn on the shaders. The yellow dots are the particles shaded with a bright yellow for contrast. A shader by the way is a term that displays the color or lighting effects within Blender that you chose so you can see how it looks while you create prior to processing the final rendered piece. I found that the program works faster with the shaders off and it’s not so distracting. It’s a lot like coloring in greyscale first prior to using real colors to make sure that the piece is balanced correctly.

Video and Audio Processing

Blender has a really cool video editor that I very much enjoyed using. After I was pleased with the results of the final MP4 video, I uploaded the audio file that I found from the YouTube audio library. YouTube has a lot of good choices to select from. I entered the search term for a “haunted forest” and found a track called Green Forest by Riot.

Blender video editor

The trick during this part of the process was lining up the frames with the audio. The music file was much longer than my 100 frame video so I copied and pasted it over and over until I had enough cells to line up with the music. Every other cell I selected the reverse cell option so that it didn’t look jumpy or like it was starting over from the beginning. I almost got up and walked away twice because it seemed tedious but I am pleased with the final product.

Final image in blender

Final Image Capture

Above is the final rendered image exported from Blender. I added two spot lights to the image for a magical contrast. There is the spot light coming from the top left. It’s a little hard to see in this picture. The bottom light by the rocks is placed down below with the bloom setting turned on. This makes the rocks seem a little more magical.

I hope you enjoyed the process overview for this piece. If you want to see the finished video, please click the link at the top to check it out.

Send a note to me if you like it or if you think I should do more. If I know people like them and are interested in this sort of thing, It will motivate me to make more.

Happy creating!

Complication of Horror Available Now

Do you like ghost stories?

Available now is my 26 page comic containing two short stories along with some bonus art as well as two videos. This is comic is my first ever and I’m really excited to share this with you. Buy my product by following the link.

About

This comic took about six months to write, illustrated and put together into a finished book. My inspiration for this comes from watching many episodes of Twilight Zone and Outer Limits. I always enjoyed stories where the ending was not what you were expecting. Irony in comics is one of my favorite writing styles when it comes to comics no matter the genre.

The comic was completely drawn and lettered within Clip Studio Paint. It’s starting to get a lot of the same features as Photoshop but caters more toward those who build comics with all the tools that are available. I typically spent about three to four hours a day building the pages for this.

About Me

I’ve been in the military for 24 years and have spent much of my free time learning to become a better artist. Many books have been read and many videos have been watched. When I was 19 I was going to art school at a community college but ran into hard times trying pay for school and work at the same time. I eventually went into the military thinking that I would do just one enlistment (four years). I met my wife of 22 years of marriage and raised five wonderful children together. During this time, it wasn’t an easy thing to leave a job with stability just to go into a completely different field so I chose to continue on in the military while also staying to stay active with my art.

Thanks

As always, I want to thank everyone who supports my ability to keep drawing, sharing, and doing what I love most.

Fire Witch

I need to build a fire simulation in Blender to add some more affects. I’ll then add it to YouTube like the others. I am about to do some more traveling so I will be away for a while.

Love to know what you think so far.

Cybernetic Police On the Hunt (Clip Studio Paint and Blender)

Just in for the weekend. I’ve made another video using Clip Studio Paint and Blender with a bit of a science fiction spin. The cybernetic space police are on the hunt looking for the one that got away. Whether it’s on a distance planet or the surface of a comet, the cybernetic space police can go where others can’t.
